Removal of hexavalent chromium by mixed micelles of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide using micellar enhanced ultrafiltration

چکیده
Our study includes removal of Cr(VI) by using mixed surfactants (Non-ionic: Cationic). A common cationic surfactant Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB) with two different nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 and Tween-80 were used to remove Cr(VI) by micellar enhanced ultrafiltration technique. The effect of parameters such as initial feed metal ion concentration, pH and filtration time on % Rejection of Cr(VI) were analysed. Low pH favoured the removal of Cr(VI) and exhibited maximum rejection percentage(>90%) at pH 2 for both systems. The optimum feed Cr(VI) ion concentration and filtration time can be suggested as 20 mgL and 60 minutes respectively. It was found that CTAB+Triton X-100 and CTAB+Tween-80 gave Cr(VI) percentage removal upto 97% and 93% respectively. The adsorption data were studied using Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevick (DRK) adsorption Isotherms. The data fitted well in Langmuir model (R=0.99). From DRK isotherm, mean free energy EDR, was much lower than 8 kJ.mol suggesting the Cr(VI) adsorption onto mixed micelles is physisorption. Thermodynamic parameters ∆G°, ∆H° and ∆S° were evaluated revealing the process to be spontaneous and exothermic accompanied by increased randomness at the interface.

متن کاملMicellar–enhanced ultrafiltration of chromate [Cr(VI)] ion from aqueous streams by using cationic surfactant
Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in industrial effluent is one of the most serious environmental problems in India and also in other countries. Micellar-Enhanced Ultrafiltration (MEUF) of the chromate anions from aqueous solutions has been studied at room temperature (28±2°C) using cationic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), micelles of which adso...

In this research, the micellar behavior of a cationic surfactant, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and an nonionic surfactant, polysorbate 20 (Polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate) in different alcohol solutions media was investigated over the temperature range 293.15-313.15 K. The interaction between two surfactants in binary systems can be determined by calculating the values of t...
متن کاملA Kinetic and Mechanistic Study on the Reduction of Dithizone by Stannous Chloride (acidic medium) in Micellar System
Kinetic studies on the reduction of dithizone by stannous chloride was carried out in acidic medium (HCl) at room temperature. The study was made in the presence of cationic surfactant, Cetyl Trimethyl ammonium Bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant, Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS). The reduction of dithizone in the presence of CTAB is much faster than in the absence of surfactant in acidic medium...
متن کاملCorrelation between the geometrical shape and growth behaviour of surfactant micelles investigated with small-angle neutron scattering.
The correlation between the growth behaviour and geometrical shape for CTAB-rich mixed micelles formed by the cationic surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and the anionic surfactant sodium octyl sulphate (SOS) has been investigated with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Small tablet-shaped micelles formed by CTAB are found to grow only weakly in size with increasing surf...
